The first vision that the traveler who arrives in Tolox has is a beautiful white town that seems to be held between the high peaks and the fertile valleys dotted with cultivated fields. From the highest in the sky, at La Torrecilla peak, to the deepest part of the earth at the GESM chasm, Tolox is a clear example of diversity and contrasts. Contrasts of light colors of limestone and red of peridotites. Contrasts of peace, rocket fire, cowbells and shells.
This charming municipality in the interior of the province of Malaga keeps the memory of its Andalusian past in its urban layout. Narrow and steep streets with houses with whitewashed facades topped by a roof of Arabic tiles, remains of castles and walls, old mills and vestiges of past battles that still survive today in their festivals and traditions.
The town of Tolox, brings together a pinch of everything that represents nature, history, traditional culture and the popular knowledge of the mountains from very distant times. Not surprisingly, the origin of this town dates back to the Neolithic.
Tolox’s eventful history is equally attested by its heritage remains. Just a few references in the name of the streets allow us to reconstruct the plan of what was the castle, the center of Moorish rebellions and fierce struggles between Christians and Muslims. Today this neighborhood known as the Rinconadas del Castillo allows you to get lost among its winding streets and passageways to imagine life back then.
A past that continues to be recreated every year in its popular festivals such as the Day of the Girls, the Day of the Powder or the San Roque cohetá. Art performances, workshops, demonstrations of old professions and gastronomic tastings of typical products take place in the Plaza Alta de Tolox and fill the terraces of bars and restaurants with a good atmosphere.
Today every corner of Tolox tells in its streets and its festivals this past history collected in pieces of daily life in its House Museum of Popular Traditions. But Tolox also embraces the present and modernity in the works of urban art that every year, during the Art Tolox fair, fill its walls and turn it into a living museum of contemporary art in the open air.
Tolox is also known for belonging to the network of Thermal Villas due to the existence in the municipality of so-called “bitter waters” springs, which were traditionally used for therapeutic purposes. In 1869 the Fuente Amargosa Spa was inaugurated in the village and its waters were declared of public utility. This last century spa where famous figures such as politicians, bullfighters, nobles or actors have passed, is the only one in Spain that offers inhalation treatments for respiratory system disorders and one of the few in the world of its category.
Approaching the promenade of the Tolox Spa will allow you to enjoy a regenerating forest bath. From here you will reach the starting point of some of the main trails that run through the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. Paths that sometimes run through crystalline rivers full of life, springs and waterfalls where you can cool off and enjoy peace.
